MMA – The Mini-Materials – Analyzer

The εMMA (enhanced mini-materials analyser) X-Ray Diffractometer although compact in size, offers enhanced capabilities to the end user.
The original design of the MMA included such features as interchangeable parallel beam and focusing geometries, variable radius, provision for multiple detectors, interchangeable optics and many different stages.
These features are all carried over to the εMMA and in addition, the εMMA offers enhanced features such as:
θ-θ mode – to maintain a horizontal sample stage, essential for high temperature and non-ambient sample chambers.
New advanced microprocessor controller, offering 8 simultaneous axes and Ethernet comms. εMMA has an IP address on a network, and can be driven from any PC on the network, or indeed the Internet, subject to bandwidth and other packet data constraints.
New sample stages for large, heavy and bulky samples, in addition to spinning, capillary spinner, and mounting provision for a select few non-ambient stages available from PAAR ®.
New primary beam optics such as confocal graded d-spacing mirror for transmission and Capillary modes.
New software enhancements – includes an “accessory picker” that allows instant re-calibration after interchange of any beam component for Visual XRD. Traces includes integrations with the latest release of the ICDD databases PDF-2 and PDF-4+.
Much work has been done on thin film, surface analysis, depth profiling and reflectometry using a parallel beam detector with a very fine divergence slit. This gives particularly impressive results when used with the unique Solid-State Peltier-cooled Si PIN Diode detector. This detector offers 3 x – 4 x better sensitivity then the traditional Xe proportional detector with a curved graphite crystal monochromator.
For rapid interchange options, each stage, optic and detector has its own calibration and swapping configurations as easy as selecting a new item from the accessories picker.

SAXS/WAXS/BIOSAXS analysis: SAXSpace

SAXSpace is a compact lab-scale system for SAXS and WAXS studies with a brilliant block collimation system ensuring an intense X-ray beam for very short measurement times. It determines the size, size distribution, and shape of nano-sized particles and sample domains and is especially suited for analyzing isotropic, colloidal, and biological samples (BioSAXS). SAXSpace’s robust design, high system uptime, and automated workflows ensure a large sample throughput and high-quality SWAXS results.
Speed-up your daily lab work: optimized for high throughput
The investigation and characterization of biological samples, like proteins and enzymes, or nanoparticle dispersions typically requires multiple analyses of many samples at once. SAXSpace is optimized to handle up to 192 liquid samples in an automated workflow. Combined with the ASX autosampler fast and precise sampling and efficient cleaning without operator input is ensured. This enables measurements overnight, providing you with complete data sets for analysis when you start the next day. The ASX autosampler is equipped with a cooling option, which is often necessary for sensitive biological samples.
Save your time with TrueFocus and Stagemaster
Time-saving alignment is achieved at the push of a button with TrueFocus, a fully automated and intelligent self-alignment of all X-ray components and sample stages.
In parallel, Stagemaster automatically recognizes which stage is implemented and configures the system accordingly. This ensures the best possible result for your measurement setup without any manual steps and gives you full flexibility for your measurements.
SAXS and WAXS at once: TrueSWAXS
TrueSWAXS enables simultaneous and continuous SWAXS studies up to 60° 2Ѳ at uniform resolution. With the collected scattering signal at low angles (SAXS) you get information on large assemblies like particle structure and the particle/macromolecule assembly, up to a few hundred nanometers, whereas the signal at large angles (WAXS) gives information on the crystalline structure at the atomic level. The TrueSWAXS feature delivers all of this in one go from one and the same sample and helps you accelerate your throughput for multiple analyses. With TrueSWAXS there is no need to re-align your system. You can be sure of uniform resolution and reliable results.
Wide range of measurement options with versatile sample stages
The versatile SAXSpace sample chamber gives you countless analysis options and full experimental flexibility. Benefit from a wide range of sample stages and holders for ambient and non-ambient studies, like temperature-controlled- (-150 °C to 600 °C), humidity-, defined mechanical load studies, automated measurements of multi-solid/paste-like/liquid samples or analysis of thin films and nanostructured surfaces (GISAXS). The sample stages are plug-and-play and automatically recognized via Stagemaster, which configures the system automatically. The sample chamber also gives you the freedom to use your own experimental setup, for which Anton Paar provides customized solutions.
Powerful control and data analysis software
Control and analysis of scattering data calls for powerful software solutions. SAXSdrive™ and SAXSanalysis™ support automated routine steps, like measurement setup and alignment, and thereby comprehensive data analysis. Benefit from serial measurements, automated sampling, temperature scans, and time-dependent studies, and analyze your received 1D and 2D data sets. Determination of parameters like radius of gyration (RG), particle size, Porod constant, specific surface, Kratky plot, etc. is standard in SAXSanalysis™. For advanced structure interpretation (PCG) like particle size, size distribution, shape and inner structure, IFT and deconvolution techniques are available.

RheoSAXS: Rheology and SAXS in one

The lab-scale RheoSAXS system is the clever combination of two world-class Anton Paar instruments: The renowned SAXSpoint 2.0 delivers brilliant results on the nanoscale. Combined with the DSR 502 dynamic shear rheometer (based on the MCR rheometers) this makes RheoSAXS – the first commercially available setup for studying structural and rheological properties simultaneously in one setup in your lab. RheoSAXS resolves the combined information of your sample within minutes.
New opportunities for combined RheoSAXS measurements
  • 10 nNm minimum torque in rotation and 2 nNm minimum torque in oscillation allow measurement of low-viscosity dilute suspensions.
  • Easy to handle thanks to the quick coupling mechanism of the upper geometry
  • Marks on the flange between DSR 502 and the X-ray measuring chamber make changing from axial to tangential setup easy.
X-ray-transparent RheoSAXS measuring cell
  • Measure parallel or perpendicular to flow direction to obtain the orientation of the sample distribution with respect to flow direction.
  • Cylindrical measuring geometry corresponding to DIN 53019, gap size 1 mm, made of X-ray-transparent polycarbonate
  • Filling volume: 8 mL
  • Temperature control in the range from -10 °C to 90 °C
Upgrade of all existing SAXSpoint 2.0 systems anytime
  • All existing SAXSpoint 2.0 systems in the field can be equipped for combined RheoSAXS measurements.
  • The DSR 502 measuring head is integrated in SAXSpoint 2.0 and the system can be aligned using the SAXSdrive™ software.
  • Use SAXSanalysis™ to analyze the scattering data and RheoCompass™ on its own to analyze the rheological data.
